Building STRONG Hebrew School Students
Creating a Learning Environment that Enhances the Emotional, Social, and Cognitive Development of Every Student
Children and teenagers absorb new information and develop new skills faster than at any other time in their lives. In Building STRONG Hebrew School Students, renowned educators Linda and Al Silbert present their STRONG Learning TM System, beginning with a description of the physical and emotional environment in which those young minds thrive—and don’t. Using case studies from their 40+ years of working with students of all ages—in classrooms, small groups, and one-on-one consultations—they provide common sense examples of what an environment conducive to learning looks like.
In Part II, they review longstanding theories of how we all think and learn and introduce the LEARN process through which educators start at the level of Hebrew school students’ knowledge and move them through stages that support the movement of information from short-term working memory into long-term storage, i.e., learning.
Finally, in Part III, they provide recommendations and suggestions for working with students presenting unique challenges—from those who seem unmotivated or disorganized to those diagnosed with learning disabilities and ADD/ADHD—and guidelines for dealing with circumstances common to Hebrew after-school programs like frequent absenteeism and class sizes that are too large.
